To the Field and Back Again: Celebrating 120 Years of Geology Field Trips at OU (PDF)

What I loved about this project
In my research, I discovered that one of the original criteria for becoming a geologist was being a gentleman. Not a man—a gentleman, as in social status. Why? Because to be a geologist, you had to own a horse, and only gentlemen could afford to own, feed, and stable their own horses. This historical tidbit became an incredible fundraising tool for the feature article, allowing us to ask: What is our modern-day “horse?” What is that one constraint—seemingly small in the grand scheme of things—that is keeping students from accessing this program today? The concept has since become a part of my vernacular. You might hear me ask: “What’s the horse here?”

What I loved about this project
It was a privilege to write about this research, which is set to be an important part of the energy transition and solve problems for places like Oklahoma with retired oil wells.

This article, along with a news release and other efforts garnered national attention, including an article in Vox.

What I loved about this project

Ron Gan is a giant in her field, a pioneer who melded the disciplines of mechanical and biomedical engineering to revolutionize how doctors and engineers approached hearing loss. I wrote this article in 2012, years before Dr. Gan's research moved to preventing hearing caused by blasts in soldiers. But her personal history is even more interesting.
